With a day to go until MCM Scotland in Glasgow, the excitement is building up nicely, and yet surprisingly. It’s been a busy year for the team at What Happen In Gaming team, with many events covered, so this MCM event almost snuck up on us.
I was sitting on the Glasgow subway, still half asleep in the early morning hours, when I spotted the adverts for MCM Comic Con, one in the train and another one on the station as I got out. And just like that I started getting excited and started reminiscing about last year’s event.
MCM Comic Con Scotland 2017 was the first big event we covered – there were over 30,000 visitors on the first day! I was blown away by the number of amazing cosplayers, and how much details some people put into their costumes was simply out of this world.
Everyone was approachable and easy to talk to, and the whole event featured such a friendly and inviting atmosphere. We covered both days, probably walked the distance of five marathons as we paced back and forth throughout the whole venue.
The vendors were amazing, and it was worth visiting them many times because each time you would notice a new item that you missed earlier. With crowds being so big, you would be forgiven for missing out on the small details.
I try to buy a novelty item from each event I go to (usually pins) as these can also be impossible to find elsewhere. I am quite fond of these – my favourite being a retro 1920’s style Indiana Jones pin.
The star guest line-up last year was also probably the best we have seen so far. We go to interview the amazing Sam J Jones (Flash Gordon) who told us some fantastic stories – one was about how we went to Hulk Hogan’s house for Christmas and had to fake an injury to avoid working out with the Hulkster!
Interviews with Veronica Taylor (voice of Ash Ketchum from Pokemon) and the original Power Rangers followed both were equally unforgettable. Veronica Taylor is one of the nicest people I have ever met, and the interview was more like a friendly chat with an old friend.
Speaking to the Power Rangers just reminded me of when I was a kid, and roundhouse-kicking stuff in my house while I pretended to be one of them. Ah, the good old times.
In all honesty, I do not know what to expect from this year’s event, but that is also the fun part of it. I can’t wait to get there as the doors open and see the incredible costumes, looking for treasure with the vendors, and brushing shoulders with the guest stars.
Comic Cons are also great family events – I remember seeing a Storm Trooper dad, with his Darth Vader son who was happily waving his red lightsabre as he went on stage for the Cosplay Masquerade at the end.
If you are looking for a great event this weekend, attend the MCM Comic Con at the SEC in Glasgow, and of course, say hi if you see us!
